Howdy!
Tami here on the Clear Scraps Blog today with a project I'd like to share with you.
Have you had a chance to take a look at Clear Scraps' new SHIPLAP SHAPES? You can find them along with some other new products from Clear Scraps in the "What's New" category.
The Shiplap Shapes come in 2 sizes, large and small. I used the Large Shiplap Cutting Board to make this home decor piece...
I had painted a cabinet to match the new paint in my living room and I had some leftover paint. I decided to use that paint so it would match the colors I already had in the room.
I started by giving the wood a nice, thick coat of aqua paint and letting it dry completely.
After the paint dried, I started applying the designs on the Enjoy the Little Things, 6 X 16 stencil.
I used a dark grey pigment ink for "enjoy"...
Pigment Ink takes awhile to dry, so I sped up the dry time using a heat gun. It is important to heat set each design as it is applied so that you don't smear the portions you've already done while you ink new areas.
A dark red color was used for the "the little things" and again, I heat set each word as it was added. I also cleaned the stencil in between each word too. Again, to avoid any potential for smearing or ink transfer.
Another good hint for using stencils is to use blue painters tape to hold the stencil and materials to your work surface and to keep the stencil from moving while you ink it
Also keep in mind you don't necessarily have to use a stencil as it is made! You can just use portions of it or change the placement of the items on the stencil. In the case of this stencil, the small words underneath were too long to fit on the cutting board. So I centered "little" under "enjoy", then brought the other 2 words in closer to either side of it.
You can also use pieces of blue tape to tape off any portions of the stencil design you don't want to use that are close to those portions you DO want to use. Don't forget to mark off the edges of the stencil where the design is close to the edge. Doing this will help you to keep the ink or paint where you want it!
To finish the cutting board, I made a bow from vintage black seam binding and a dotted natural ribbon. I also tied on a few pieces of greenery for a little "freshness"...
